About reflexology

Reflexology dates back at least 5000 years and was practised in China as a form of zone therapy; over the centuries it has been defined into what we know today as the powerful and healing foot or hand treatment . It is thought to have been used originally to help with pain relief, as reflexology stimulates the body to release endorphins , the bodys’ natural painkillers .

Reflexology is a very effective form of therapeutic foot massage , which activates the healing powers of the body ; it works on the long established principle that there are energy zones which run throughout the body and reflex areas in the feet which relate to all the major organs, glands and body parts .

Reflexology is classified as a holistic therapy, in other words it aims to bring about good health by looking at the body as a whole and not just a part . Reflexology reduces stress and induces deep relaxation. Reflexology works as a preventative treatment as it aims to trigger the body to return to a state of balance, or homeostasis.

The physical mechanism of Reflexology is still not fully understood, but during a treatment the Reflexologist stimulates over 7000 nerves in the feet, which works on the circulatory and nervous systems to clear neural pathways and revitalise the body . Reflexology is an excellent de-tox !

Reflexology is a natural and non invasive form of therapy, which not only is very enjoyable , but is deeply healing and relaxing . Many people have found relief from long term ailments or injuries through reflexology as it seeks to restore the body to balance and eliminate the root problems rather than just masking the symptoms, as is common with many conventional treatments. ,

Reflexology is excellent for treating the following conditions : Back , neck and shoulder problems , joint pains , bursitis , arthritis , stress and stress related problems i.e. I.B.S , M.E , fertility problems ( Reflexology has an excellent history of helping with fertility problems ) hormone related problems such as slow thyroid , heavy periods etc , digestive disorders ( particularly IBS and constipation ) .

Let us not forget that this is not a treatment which is reserved for the infirm and adult population - I have had very good results over the years treating children with reflexology – children respond very well to treatments usually because they have no pre – conceived ideas about it and they are very receptive to therapeutic stimuli . Reflexology has proven to be very effective in treating children with recurring ear infections, urine and kidney infections , constipation- which is quite common in this age of junk food ) – excema and asthma .

As with many holistic treatments , because the therapist is only working with your body and its’ ability to heal , it may not be an instant fix and sometimes can seem to be slower to work than conventional medicine – this is because it is working on a much deeper level , restoring the body to balance and helping to eliminate the root problem for long term benefit . Due to the fact that the body is being urged to shake off any imbalances and toxins it does occasionally trigger what is known as a ‘healing crisis’. This can be anything from a headache , to excessive need to urinate as the body is detoxing , to temporary cold symptoms ; this can be a bit alarming especially if you are having a reflexology treatment in order to get better , not feel worse ! , but rest assured that it is in fact a very good sign as it is a signal that the body is responding to the treatment and that cellular renewal and circulatory stimulation is happening .

Reflexology FAQs

Q. why the feet?

A. Reflexology is performed on the feet because established energy lines follow paths down the body to the feet, and a qualified reflexologist can detect imbalances in the body by reading the REFLEction , or map of the feet in the individual .

Q.Will it tickle?

A. No. Reflexology is a form of compression massage and is normally quite firm; it can even be quite tender in areas if an imbalance is detected ! The overall experience though, is without doubt extremely relaxing and therapeutic.
